Gremlin sketches

Buffalo man

I was looking through some African tribal art and there was this little man made of stone that struck me as "buffalo like". So I took a few facial features from him that I liked and took the buffalo thing a little further. I would like to do more of these human amalgamations in the future.

Griffin sketch

Tonight's sketch was a short one. I may try this again another time. I focused on the posture and power that the image of a griffin can create.

Charlie the chocolate lab

Did a little sketch tonight of my dog Charlie... kind-of. It was more of an amalgamation of him and "Dug" from the movie up.

Marty Mcfly caricature

Worked again tonight on a caricature of Marty. It didn't come out the way I wanted. But there's something there. This is from the scene where Marty first meets his dad in the dinner in 1955.

Doc Brown caricature

So tonight I again worked on caricatures. This time it was Doc Brown from Back to The Future. One of my favorite movies of all time. Christopher Lloyd can make some of the most iconic surprised faces, and I tried to capture the one he made when his time machine made its first trip.

A fish in a teapot

I read The Cat in The Hat tonight for Olivia. Thought it would be cool to do a more 3-dimensional drawing of the fish from the story after her falls into the teapot. I have been working on my reflected light lately. This teapot was done without a reference model. Just the simple drawing out of the story.

A fine kettle of witch

So I finished the second part of my witch stew drawing. She'd just kicking back enjoying a bubbling cauldron.

I had an idea for a witch in her own cauldron. I only got to lay down the kettle tonight. I think I'll complete my drawing tomorrow.

Bumper car sketch

I was looking around the internet as I always do when I cant think of anything to draw, and I came across these great pictures someone took of a carnival. They were colorful and slightly overexposed with wonky angles. So I drew a bumper car and its driver at some wonky angle of my own.

Lantern flower drawing

I'm quite to tired to write much of anything tonight. This drawing took it out of me. I'm reasonably pleased though.

Tarantula drawing

Drew a big hairy spider tonight. I realized I had not done much hair in my drawings, so tonight I practiced a little.

Rhythm of the body

I studied the forces that push and pull on the body and twist the form in motion. The rhythm that is created from shoulders to hips to feet is something I need to study further on if I am to create really dynamic, clear movement in characters.

Waterfall drawing - Part One

I couldn't do justice to this waterfall drawing in just one night, so this will be a two-parter. I've been wanting to practice my environments more lately, therefore I'm going to work hard on this one.

Yoda art

So I'm still practicing my cross-hatching with light and shadow. And as a Star Wars geek at heart I drew me some Yoda tonight.

 An unfinished scarab beetle tonight. I exaggerated his features and am still working on using reflected light, this time in cross hatch.

Ambient light study

So I'm working on my lighting tonight. Ambient light has always been something I've neglected, and for realistic and 3-dimensional art I need to pay more attention to how light actually plays over objects.

Skull and kittens sketch

I thought this little match up would be funny. I believe this truly exemplifies how much cats care whether we live, die or grow mushrooms.

An anxious octopus flexing his twisting tentacles in anticipation.

Grizzly bear gesture sketches

Just a few sketches tonight of a very imposing figure. The Grizzly Bear has huge lumbering shoulders a sloped back and large jaw muscles that wrap all the way to their forehead. So much exaggeration of the form is possible with such physical characteristics.

Coral reef and fish drawing - Day 3

Well this little project is taking longer than I thought with all the details I wanted to put into it. Plus the coloring is not right yet. But this is the basic Idea I was going for. I'll just have to find time someday to develop it further.

Continuing the drawing, tonight I worked on the other two fish and a bit of the reef itself.

Tonight I worked out the layout of a multi-stage drawing that I will spread out through the next two days. This is a fish.

Hummingbird sketch

I didn't have a lot of time tonight, so I just did a little hummingbird. I have plans for a more detailed and colorful drawing in the near future featuring hummingbirds.

Splash sketch

So I wanted to create the look of heavy wet paint splashing down from above, and only show the paint... And so I did.

Caricature

Working on my caricatures tonight. I have managed to do a little more distortion than last time. I'll just chip at this until I'm comfortable with it I suppose.

Venom

I drew one of my favorite Marvel comic book characters tonight, Venom. I have been studying the style of the animator that created the MTV version of Aeon Flux. He used highly foreshortened forms, hard angles and twisted perspectives to give a great sense of energy and fast paced movement. I think this fits with Venom's character. I would of liked to work on the symbiote tendrals that Venom sometimes has flying off of him.

Capuchin monkey sketch

I took a reference photo of a capuchin monkey and put him into a more interesting pose. I worked on lighting him more realistically than I normally do.

More Dark Crystal - Skeksis

I would like to develop some of my own versions of the Skeksis instead of just drawing from a reference photo. Maybe someday.
