Seashell sketch

Tonight my drawing is a look back on high school art class. You know where they put a shell on a table and tell you to draw. They're complex and take a while to sketch but they do come out pretty nice.

Dancing hippos

Just a few sketches from Disney's Fantasia and the dancing hippos therin.

Fungi fun

Just a few mushrooms tonight. I do love mushroom spore patterns.

Vines

Lately I've been finding the need to draw things that are entertaining for me, as opposed to what might be directly related to furthering my skill. But I'm still learning.

Japanese woodblock style waves

This is my first attempt at a favorite of mine. The waves depicted by the Japanese woodblock print artists have always interested me.

Tree roots sketch

I love to draw the twisted forms of tree roots. Tonight I drew them slightly stylized to emphasize their interlocking twists and turns, hollows and bumps. As I was drawing I became aware of how much volume I could create by layering one twist over another. This was a fun exercise that I will revisit.

Iris sketch

Just a simple flower tonight... long day

Dennis Hopper

I wanted to do another portrait tonight and for some reason Dennis Hopper popped into my mind. Made me sad to look up reference images of him though... his distinguished body of work, all the fun characters he portrayed were shadowed tonight for me by his untimely death by cancer. But to honor him in my own way, I combined three of my favorite characters from his movies into one portrait.

Lincoln

I took a campaign photo taken when Lincoln was young, and touched it up with his distinctive beard. It turned out pretty well for an hour of work.

The Tramp chasing birds

I took the Tramp and entered him into a scene reminiscent of the movie, but of my own creation. I do enjoy drawing Disney.

A relaxing alligator

Today was a warm spring day, and it turned into a perfect night. Still warm with a cool breeze blowing the scent of tree blossoms in through my bedroom window. I sat and sipped a cool glass of water. So tonight I drew Louis from The Princess and The frog, sitting against a tree in the bayou sipping a glass of ice tea.

Bat mutant

Something creepy tonight, a man transforming into a bat. All I had time for was his bust. Its kind of a different take on the werewolf.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

The troll wife

So I read an old folktale tonight and decided to do a little drawing about a troll impersonating a man's wife. I might continue the narrative with some more drawings in the future.

Monday, April 16, 2012

The Wolf

Just a little sketch tonight of the big bad wolf and the aftermath of gorging himself on grandma and little red.

Sunday, April 15, 2012

Daffodils

My favorite spring flower, and quite beautiful to draw.

Heffalumps and Woozles

I remembered tonight about heffalumps and woozles. Disney use to scare the crap out of me, but I loved it. The fact that Disney use to go dark is awesome. I hope that the only things that appeal to consumers now days are not just soft, pretty crap being spun a thousand different ways. I want to believe that parents of children out there could still accept something, that at times is dark, but awesome. There can be no light without the dark.

Darkness

My favorite personification of evil or the devil persona has always been Tim Curry's Darkness from the movie Legend. The makeup they did for his character has never been surpassed in my opinion, including Hellboy.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Hanuman langurs

Some monkeys hanging out in a gnarled old tree.

Cothing studies

I need quite a bit of practice on how clothing hangs and stretches over forms. This is only one of many studies that I need to accomplish to get an eye for this.

Sanguine gestures

A few gesture drawings tonight using the curving forms of sanguine to give them movement and interest.

Monday, April 9, 2012

Butterflies

A little sketch tonight of delicate little creatures. I'm afraid I didn't treat the drawing with the delicacy it deserves. But I learned about drawing them as I went.

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Mouth sketches

Just a few sketches tonight of another difficult anatomical structure. The mouth can be a very important feature to show emotions. It is also one of the structures of the face, that if done wrong, can ruin the impression of depth and realism.

Spirit of the Spring

The final drawing of the spring spirit in all her colored glory. I hope my Grandma will like this.

Friday, April 6, 2012

Spirit of the Spring

So this is the rough draft of the drawing I'm doing for my grandma for Easter.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Rabbit sketches

Tonight I was trying to get a sense of rabbits. Their movement, volumes and basic forms.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

A little deer

So I'm playing with an idea for a drawing I'd like to do. A made up scene from Bambi only realistic and highly foreshortened. I plan on having a little deer, a skunk and a rabbit looking up at a singing bird on a limb overhead.

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Dragon tree

A twisted tree lounged upon by a contented flightless dragon.

Monday, April 2, 2012

Nose sketches

Just a few sketches tonight to better understand the construction of the human nose.

Sunday, April 1, 2012

Fantasia firebird sketch

In Fantasia 2000 my favorite scene is the Firebird sequence. It is a beautiful and moving artistic creation. So this is the mother nature spirit spreading her wings blooming with cherry blossoms. I may develop this idea further as a present for someone.
