Fighting Faerie

So I asked Melissa what I should draw tonight and she says she'll find me some examples on the internet. You guessed it... google images filled with faries riding unicorns. So this is part one of the sketch I'm working on, the defending faerie.

Toadish Bureaucrat

Here is an example of the third caste of magical creatures. He took probably about an hour and a half in all, not a bad nights work.

Bug & Mammal

Two characters I drew tonight in response to an idea I had for a children's book about magical humanoid creatures that disguise themselves as ordinary animals. The idea I have is pretty complex and would take a while to explain so for now, I'll just be posting sketches and ideas for the book until it is more flushed out. Cheers

Hand studies

After a boring, then stressful, then finally tiring day I decided to do some simple hand studies tonight. The book I'm studying out of is by Burne Hogarth. I like how he simplifies the forms so that they're easily understandable and memorized.

Spinal snake

I felt like doing something detailed and sweet tonight, so I give you SPINAL SNAKE!

Tree study

Tonight's drawing I decided to study the overlapping nature of tree foliage. I'm very interested in volumes and how to illustrate them.

Face Structure Studies

Its been a while since I was in school, and I've forgotten a lot of the anatomy I once knew. Today's study session consisted of me following along to Lumis and the construction of the human face. Its funny how most of the construction skills are in the back of my head. They've just been clouded through years of neglect and speeding through drawings. I've forgotten what lies beneath the skins surface.

Bailey & Cody

Today I've drawn my inside dog and cat. They only laid still for about 10 minutes, 5 for the cat actually. But during that time I got enough information jotted down to roughly finish the sketches. I'm actually surprised at how easy this was. I guess all the work I've been doing, drawing from my mind the volumes of characters, has taught me how to see those volumes and contours in a real life model.

Gremlins in the kitchen

My wife's worst nightmare, and what she claims must be the reason the kitchen needs to be cleaned so often. The fully rendered character is what I imagine in all the poses I've set up in the scene. It would be cool if I got the chance to finish it all. Funnily enough the blocked in characters in the scene make it look like peanut M&M and his friends have run amok.

Wraith King

To prove that I can do more than draw princesses, I drew a badass ...princess
This took me a little over an hour tonight.

Little princess slumber party - Test composition

I'm not entirely happy with what I came up with for a composition, looks like this is going to take quite a bit more work to get a good balance to the characters while not spacing them out so evenly. I suppose it does show what direction I'm thinking of at least.

Little Mulan joining the fight

Little Mulan is the last of the girls at the slumber party. Now all I have to do is composite them all together into one long landscape illustration, and color them up. More to come.

Pillow Fighting Pocahontas

So I wasn't feeling altogether inspired for tonight's drawing. I'm trying to get over this plateau in my drawing endeavor. Hopefully within a month or so drawing every night after work will be routine and wont be such a struggle to force myself to do.

Little Cindrella

Tonight's drawing features Cinderella long before she could fit into those fancy footwear.

Monday, January 16, 2012

Princess (Sort of) Tiana

So tonight's drawing was the other half of the frog drawing from last night.

Sunday, January 15, 2012

A Princess and a frog

The next in the princess order, But not the combo you'd expect. Tomorrow's drawing will finish this two person pose.

More Baby Princesses

Today I sketched out snow white eating an apple at the little princess slumber party. I'll have all of them soon, then its just the final composition, redrawing poses and final color.

Jasmine, Nala, & Rapunzel

I'm continuing my sketching of the Disney princesses tonight with three poses I thought were cute. My nieces should really like what I have in mind for the rest.

Baby Belle

So I didn't get time over the Christmas holiday to finish the drawing I wanted to do for my nieces. The idea I came up with was to picture all of the Disney princesses gathered around for a sleep over, the kicker, they're all little girls. So I've done some sketches in the past and tonight I'm starting this project back up again.

The finished drawing

I finally finished it tonight, Kurt and Gunter hiking through the mountains is done, I like it.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Almost done

I'm almost done with the drawing of Kurt and Gunter. Just a few more touches, a few highlights and I'll be done. I'm going to see if I can get a fuller contrast with the use of Black Acrylic paint on top of the flat black graphite pencil I've been using. So far so good though, and I should have the final drawing done and online tomorrow.

Base painting & half-way there

Well tonight I finished the undercoat painting on primered mason board, and got about half way through the drawing details on Kurt and Gunter. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have it done and ready for his birthday.

Thumbnail: Kurt & Gunter

So today I put down on paper a few thumbnails for a drawing I'm doing for my boss for his birthday. He loves his German Shepard Gunter and is from a Cave Junction logging family so I figured a picture of him and his dog out in nature would be appropriate. Tomorrow, the progress on the actual canvas itself.

Melissa's Gaming Character 2

Another attempt at Melissa's gaming character. She showed the other one to her friends and they liked it, but it wasn't the characteristic marvel style. This one is closer but I'm having trouble with over accentuating the human form the way comic book artists do while maintaining the character's femininity. The reason why she looks the way she does is because she just got blowed up and it shredded her Us marshals uniform and vest, but her super suit below survived, now she's pissed and powering up.

Melissa's Gaming Character

So tonight I was tasked with bringing one of my wife's roll playing game characters into the visual world. She's a mutant superhero who dresses in skin tight black body armor, moonlighting as a cop. Could use some more development, and if I was to do it again I'd draw on a bigger piece of paper, but overall not bad.

Gargoyle sketch

So tonight I was out in the living room watching Avitar and racking my brain as to what I would draw tonight. After many gesture drawings and half thoughts I finally settled on this winged dude below. I'm want to get better at implying motion through a figure's stance. Tonight's drawing is not a good example.

Tired old Tree

Just another quick sketch tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I'll start work on a multi-session piece. I'll show my progress every day.

Quick Poses

I guess I'm just practicing for now, getting my skills back up to par before venturing in on a project. The interactive children's book still looms on my mind. But I think I'll start off with something a little less daunting. Anywho, for this post here's some quick armature based poses I sketched out. The fat girl was fun to draw over the thin graceful skeleton.

A Little Star Wars

Thought it would be fun to draw Boba Fett stealing Darth Vader's helmet. Just a beginning sketch of a later drawing. I like drawing kids, they have rounded bodies and underdeveloped features which makes for an easier stylization of the human form. The 3D modeling I've been doing at the day job has really helped me in depicting volume.

First Entry of the New Year

Well I made time like I promised myself I would. My first sketch of the new year was done while listening and stealing glances up at Labyrinth (you know... that classic Jim Henson movie in which David Bowie steals a baby and attempts to seduce a 15 year old girl)
This drawing of a cute dungeon lurker was done in about 45 minutes.

Here's to a happy new year!
